I've had some trouble posting pictures the past few weeks so I'll write a quick update instead. Fishing opened again today for at least a couple of days. People around the bay were already shutting things down but everyone is hoping for some late reds. The mountains are pretty red with fireweed and it's definitely feeling like fall.

The fireweed is blooming up to its tips on our hill and the sunlight has that fall slant to it the last few days. There's no denying the end of Alaskan summer when the stars are out. I'm still painting, sanding sheetrock, and working on our path outside the cabin, as well as making lists for next summer's projects. :) The other night we were taking the skiff home after dinner with Jan and Pete and the phosphorescence was incredible. The moon wasn't out but the stars were bright and every step I took along the beach kicked up what looked just like a reflection of the stars in the sky. Our boat wake seemed to be glowing. This morning a porpoise was racing around the skiff and Schooner didn't know what to think of him! We'll be out here until October, hopefully with visits from my parents and Nathan. The silvers should be showing up soon. We've had seiners near the beach the past few weeks and I am amazed at the amount of salmon they can scoop out. I'm always a little relieved to still see jumpers after they've left.

We woke up today with gusts of wind shaking the windows and lots of talk over the radio between setnet sites and tenders because some of the Uyak beaches were too rough for people to get to their nets and pick. The gusts have been up to 50 and 60 mph. Riding across the water with Peter this afternoon was a ride my 8-year-old self would have loved. A little like the up and down of a carnival ride. Schooner stuck close to the bottom of the skiff.
Until we lengthen our chimney (which Peter bolted down today) we have to keep a good fire going or the smoke sometimes heads back into the cabin so I made cookies today which warms up the kitchen pretty quickly. Schooner and I have started a daily walk to the other end of the beach for round white rocks to line the pathway and it feels like the colors of the water and sky are new every day. I found some beach wood and built a table for the tomato plants yesterday. I think they were a little too happy in the little greenhouse because they're too tall for it now! The bluff on our end of the beach had been purple on one side and pink on the other with wild roses blooming just on the southern slope but they've started blooming on the other side as well and they smell like summer even when the weather won't cooperate. I've been starting some classes and trying out new recipes, some better than others. It's kind of handy having a very hungry fisherman to try them out on. What else? We have our little propane fridge running now but before we got that going a block of cheddar seemed to be going bad so I put it in the burn pile near the tide line. A few minutes later I looked down the hill and saw Schooner swimming out to retrieve the cheese! Days keep going by quickly. I hope you're all able to fill yours with your favorite summer things. Reuben sent out a kickball set complete with bases which we played until Dan had to swim out for it. That's the trouble with games on the beach. That was before the pinks arrived, the boys are all happy to have more fish but they're working long hours now.

I missed a few weeks with this and as I post these pictures today looking out at cloudy skies, I realized that most of the new photos were taken on one of our two sunny days this July! Those were two very good days though. :) It's been so busy this year that sometimes it hardly feels like summer but we had great visitors last week who helped remind me of what a beautiful place we live in. I shared some good walks with Jennifer and Jenny and my sister even managed a quick visit as part of a work trip out to the Larsen Bay cannery. Our little niece was out with Peter's sister, Carrie and we enjoyed the new words she learned each day: tide pool, honda, Schoon. Her favorite game was feeding Schooner cookies so he misses her quite a bit. During her bath time she could even swim in the big sinks they have out here for cleaning fish. We've been eating well- lots of salmon, halibut, and this week we had fresh king and tanner crab. Unfortunately several engine breakdowns have kept Peter really busy this month. We're hoping to have more time now that those are fixed but the fishing has picked up too so they're out longer at the nets. I've been painting and weeding and working on the sheetrock. My flowers have amazed me as they continue to bloom no matter how strong the wind is and we have more arugula and radishes than we can eat from the garden. There are still lots of eagles swooping in front of our windows but no sign of the bear on our beach, hopefully he has moved to the other side of the island to the salmon streams. It's possible Peter just told me that to make me feel better though! :) I hope you all had a happy July 4th and are enjoying your summer!
